ABOUT THE DOUGLASTON CIVIC ASSOCIATION

The Douglaston Civic Association (DCA) was founded in 1910 and incorporated in 1931. It is a membership organization comprised of neighbors and business owners who work together for changes and improvements in the Douglaston/Little Neck neighborhood.

Our mission is to promote and maintain the general welfare, safety and civic spirit of its citizens by collective action on community affairs. The DCA is all volunteer and relies on the support of members and sponsors. Through partnerships with businesses and government, the DCA works to protect homeowner rights and investments and promotes plans for the orderly development of the neighborhood.

Douglaston–Little Neck is a neighborhood in the eastern part of the New York City borough of Queens. The community is located on the North Shore of Long Island, bordered to the east by the region of Great Neck in Nassau County, to the south by Glen Oaks and the North Shore Towers, and to the west by Bayside.

The neighborhood is composed of two main sections. Little Neck is generally used to refer to the area east of Marathon Parkway and/or north of Northern Boulevard, while Douglaston is the rest of the neighborhood; these classifications may overlap depending on different interpretations of neighborhood boundaries. Each of these areas has several subsections. Douglaston–Little Neck represents one of the least traditionally urban communities in New York City, with many areas (particularly those north of Northern Boulevard) having a distinctly suburban feel, similar to that of Nassau County towns located nearby such as Great Neck.

Douglaston comprises six distinct neighborhoods: Douglas Bay, Douglas Manor, and Douglaston Hill, all located north of Northern Boulevard on the peninsula abutting Little Neck Bay; Douglaston Park, located between Northern Boulevard and the Long Island Expressway; and two areas south of the Expressway, Winchester Estates and an area simply known as Douglaston.

Douglaston–Little Neck is located in Queens Community District 11 and its ZIP Codes are 11362 and 11363. It is patrolled by the New York City Police Department's 111th Precinct. Politically, Douglaston–Little Neck is represented by the New York City Council's 19th and 23rd Districts.

The area is also known for its historical society and other civic groups, notably the Douglaston Civic Association and the Douglas Manor Association. There are two historic districts, Douglas Manor and Douglaston Hill, and two houses, Allen-Beville House and Cornelius Van Wyck House, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in the neighborhood.

A Few of the Douglaston Civic Association's Accomplishments are:

  • Acquisition of lands in the alley along Northern Blvd. since 1963 with plans to continue additional acquisitions.

  • With Udalls Cove Preservation Committee worked to preserve the Cove.

  • Obtained over a million dollars through our Congressman for projects in Little Neck Bay.

  • Funded and worked with Douglaston Flower Club to beautify the community.

  • DCA got NY State Dept. of Transportation to restore the Douglaston entrance and exit ramps as part of the LIE expansion and add a climbing lane for eastbound traffic

  • Stopped a one-family home from being converted into a church on 54th Ave.

  • Stopped the Governor’s statewide ADU plans.

  • Fought the Mayor’s City of Yes plan to destroy our way of life in the guise of providing affordable housing – a lie. And we continue to fight the plan in court.

  • The DCA fought the woman’s homeless shelter on Northern Blvd. As a result, we have managed to limit any impact on its neighbors. We have several of our board members sitting on their advisory board to keep them honest.

  • DCA was able to limit the height of recently built apartment houses on Douglaston Pwky. Our board examines the building plans of new construction plans in our community and files objections as required with DOB for zoning violations.

  • The MTA recently approved a major city overhaul of all its bus routes. DCA was represented throughout the year and fought to keep much of our bus service in Douglaston and Little Neck. The Q12 stays but Q31 express is gone, the North South Little Neck Parkway route stays.  Our full report is available on our web page - www.dougcivic.com

  • DCA works closely with the NYPD Neighborhood Community Officers (NCO} and they attend our monthly meetings. See our web site for a map of red-light speed cameras in the Metro area.

  • DCA is a sponsor of the LND Memorial Day Parade. DCA gives the Doug MacKay civic cash award each year to a student chosen by the principals of our three local schools.
